Kola tortoise shades
Sub-D Modeling
A design exercise using Rhino v7’s new Subdivision tools. Using a front view of existing glasses as the modeling underlay, I was able to quickly generate a fluid 1:1 scale 3D model with all the details. Being able to push and pull the various surfaces using SubD was impressive! Very fast and easy to generate curvature continuous modeling surfaces.
image underlay
Insert Picture Frame allows you to drop in a modeling reference like the front view of glasses I found online. Building the SubD geometry with the image reference enabled a true 1:1 replica of both style and scale.
Push & Pull
Detail refinement was a breeze using the Gumball tool and directly manipulating the various surfaces of the model. Shown is the nose bridge detail and being able to easily update the geometry from pulling the surfaces outward.
Visualization
Keyshot was used to render the sunglasses to highlight the fluid, continuous 3D surfacing details and explore different material choices.
Custom Material
The custom “Kola Tortoise” material was created using a Brushed Radial 2-color texture map on a base Cloudy Plastic material.
